Description:

Dix John

PSA/DNA slabbed signature clip of Union Civil War commander and New York politician John Adams Dix (1798-1879) on a cream paper slip signed “John A. Dix”. In very good condition, with overall even toning and a minor wrinkle running through "x" of "Dix". Mounting residue verso. The slip measures 2.875" x .75" while the slab measures 5.25" x 3.125".

John Adams Dix already had over thirty years' experience as an enlisted serviceman, New York state politician and office holder, lawyer, and railroad president when he joined up as the highest ranking Major General of Volunteers in the U.S. Army in May 1861. Although Dix was too old for a field command, he contributed to the war in two significant ways: by negotiating the first Civil War prisoner exchange known as the Dix-Hill Cartel in July 1862; and by suppressing the New York City draft riots of 1863.
