ANS

John Adams (1735-1826). Autograph Note Signed, "John Adams," on a slip measuring 4.75" x 2.75", Amsterdam, May 25, 1784. Certified, graded, and encapsulated by PSA to an overall size of 7.25" x 4.25". A bit of ink splatter. Light age toning. Very minor soiling. In near fine condition.

At top of slip, an autograph note signed by A.J. Aransoon, translated from French, reads in full: "We have examined the bills of exchange with this slip and we attest to having found them to be in agreement together. Amsterdam, May 25, 1784." Additionally signed by John Welsford. At verso is a handwritten list of expenses, likely penned by Aransoon.

Below this, entirely in Adams's hand, in full: "Amsterdam May 25, 1784 / Rec'd the Bill according to the foregoing List in order to send them to Mr Barclay at Paris / John Adams." Three of Adams's words are penned across the paraph of Aransoon's signature, but legibility is not affected.

Adams served as the first U.S. Minister to the Netherlands from 1782 to 1788. Here, he forwards a list of expenses to Paris for U.S. Consul in France Thomas Barclay (1728-1793) to review. Barclay was then tasked with forwarding these expenses to Robert Morris, Jr. (1734-1806), Superintendent of Finance of the United States.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
