Joe McCarthy (1887-1978) was a celebrated major league baseball manager, but never personally played outside of the minor leagues. By the 1910s, he had transitioned to team management, briefly managing the Chicago Cubs before accepting a job with the New York Yankees during their golden age of baseball in the 1930s and 40s. McCarthy consistently downplayed his contributions as manager, explaining that he simply directed the talents of his players. His "Ten Commandments", summarizing his core baseball philosophies, include the memorable adages: "Nobody ever became a ballplayer by walking after a ball ... Do not quit ... Try not to find too much fault with the umpires. You cannot expect them to be as perfect as you are".
