Louis Joe 1914 - 1981 Rare 1944 English Boxing poster announcing a Joe Louis boxing match with two autographs signed in England in 1944 by Sgt. Joe Louis

In May and June, 1944, Sergeant Joe Louis fought exhibition matches in England. On May 25, 1944, in Reading, England, the World Heavyweight Champion fought Elza Thompson, one of his sparring partners. On May 31, 1944, T/Sgt. Charles L. Sivertsen met Sgt. Joe Louis at Arborfield Hall in Reading and Joe Louis signed two autographs for him. During World War II, the mansion was occupied by the RAF and American forces.


The Archive comprises:

(1) Signature "Joe Louis" on a 2.25" x 2.5" slip of paper affixed to the verso of a blank 3.25" x 5.5" U.S. penny postcard. Sgt. Sivertsen has written above Louis' dark signature: "autograph of Joe Louis / when writing Arborfield / Hall May 31 '44 / Reading, / England."

(2) Original 2.25" x 3.25" photograph of Sgt. Joe Louis, in uniform, signing an autograph for Sgt. Charles L. Sivertsen. On verso, Sivertsen has penned "Arborfield Hall / Reading, Eng. / May 31 - '44."

(3) Sgt. Sivertsen's "Enlisted Man's Identification Card," 3.5" x 2.5", filled out by typewriter on both sides, issued January 28, 1944, signed "Charles L. Sivertsen." On verso, it is autographed "Joe Louis." Unidentified Chinese writing at lower blank edge.

(4) Original Poster, 10.5" x 16.5". "U.S. Army Special Service / in co-operation with / Reading American Red Cross / presents / JOE LOUIS / The BROWN BOMBER / 7 P.M. / THURS: MAY 25TH / at / ELM PARK STADIUM / READING / plus / Interesting Card of Boing Matches." Printed by "Morley Service, Reading." Sgt. Sivertsen has penned "1944" next to "May 25th" and "England" next to "Reading." Light folds, nicks at upper edge, else in fine condition.

One of the "Boxing Matches" was Joe Louis vs Elza Thompson. Elm Park was a football stadium built in 1896.
