Joe Bonanno
[Tucson, AZ], ca. 1970s-1990s
Joe Bonanno Signed & Personally Owned Health Insurance Card, Ex-Bonanno Estate With Rosalie Bonanno COA!
Signed card

A health insurance card signed by American mobster Joseph "Joe Bananas" Bonanno (1905-2002) as "Joseph Bonanno" on the signature line, and also hand-inscribed by him as "Hospital" in the Policy Plan and Policy Number section. N.d. but ca. 1970s-1990s. Probably Tucson, Arizona. The personally owned "Identification Card" was issued by the American Integrity Insurance Company. Printed on a cream stock card with partly laminated front. The card lists Bonanno's Policy Plan as "--AMS + SA"; the preferred hospital as "16A"; and Bonanno's Policy Number as 217711. The reverse has policy verification information. A tiny bend to the upper left corner recto, with some scattered light surface wear, else near fine. 3.325" x 2.125." Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Bonanno's daughter-in-law, Rosalie Bonanno, on August 9, 2007 via Going 1nce LLC (Tucson, Arizona), COA number 11501.

Bonanno no doubt carried this card around in his wallet during his retirement in the American Southwest. The former mobster increasingly centered his personal and business affairs in Tucson, Arizona after he fell out of favor with other "Family" heads - and even his own family members - during the so-called Bonanno War. The card is rather ironic: it would have been used in case of accident or medical emergency during a time when many of Bonanno's contemporary mob affiliates faced the constant threat of being "rubbed out." The American Integrity Insurance Company was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and offered accident and healthcare coverage in 48 states including Arizona. The company was liquidated in 1993 and later merged with other insurance companies.

The Certificate of Authenticity signed by Rosalie Bonanno is in itself a unique piece of mob memorabilia. Rosalie Bonanno née Profaci married Joe Bonanno's eldest son Salvatore "Bill" Bonanno (1932-2008) in 1956. Rosalie was the niece of fellow crime boss Joe Profaci, and thus grew up "within the life." Rosalie was well-known for her mafia-related high profile. She published a memoir co-written by Beverly Donofrio called "Mafia Marriage: My Story" (New York: William Morrow and Company, Inc., 1990).

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
