Miro Joan 1893 - 1983

Joan Miro huge artful signature on 1976 TLS

TLS signed "Miro" in blue ball point pen at bottom left of cream 8.25" x 11.625" Joan Miro letterhead, a florid, oversized signature that partly runs off the right side of the page and measures 5.5" x 5" by itself. The stationery has the artist's name in block letters at top as well as his address "50 N'Abrines, Juan Saridakis 53, Palma de Mallorca" at bottom. The letter is dated January 5, 1976 and is addressed to "Mrs. Leonard Lyons, 1 Wesrt [sic] 81 st Street, Naw [sic] York City, 10024, USA". Letter is in very fine condition with expected paper folds. Also comes with custom envelope handwritten "Avion" in same blue ball point pen at left, bearing two cancelled Spanish stamps (one for 15 pesetas, one for 4 pesetas), and postmarked January 9, 1976 from Palma de Mallorca.

Translated letter contents can be found below. Miro's letter features several endearing misspellings and typographic errors in both English and French, some of which were hand corrected in pen.

"Dear Sylvia,

Pilar and I were very happy to receive the good news and especially to see that your husband is doing so much better.

I beg you to ask my representative, Pierre Matisse, for what you asked of me.

My affectionate thoughts of you and Leonard,

Miro"

Joan Miro (1893-1983) ranks as one of the most famous Modern Spanish artists, along with Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, to name a few. Miro joined the Surrealists in 1924, but he also explored Dadaism. Much of his work depicted subjects symbolically or abstractly, a treatment that often resulted in vibrantly colored and mind-bending representations. The "Pilar" referred to in Miro's letter refers to his life-long spouse, Pilar Juncosa Iglesias (1904-1995). The two married in 1929, almost around the same time that Miro began an exclusive business relationship with New York City gallery owner Pierre Matisse (1900-1989), who is also mentioned in the letter.

Sylvia Lyons was the spouse of prolific American newspaper columnist Leonard Lyons (1906-1976). Lyons produced 12,000 mostly arts-related newspaper columns over a forty-year period published in the New York Post under the heading "The Lyon's Den". Miro mentions in this January 1976 letter that he is happy to hear that Leonard's health had improved. The writer nevertheless died ten months later.
