Jimmy Carter Signed Letter While Campaigning for President

Single page autograph letter signed on personal letterhead, 5.5" x 8.5". Dated "July 3, 1975", and signed by Jimmy Carter as "Jimmy". Accompanied by an postmarked envelope dated "July 19, 1975" from "Jimmy Carter, Presidential Campaign, P.O. Box 1976, Atlanta, GA. 30301", 9.5" x 4.25". Letter is in fine condition, the envelope has expected grubbiness, but is neatly opened along flap. Scarce autographed letter by Carter.

Carter's letter was thanking William James Perry during his campaign for President.  During the Jimmy Carter administration, Perry served as Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, and, later still, from 1994–97, he served as Pentagon chief under President Clinton.

Most recently Perry published a book trying to elevate public consciousness that the nuclear risk has not abated since the end of the first Cold War—indeed, the risk has only grown. Said Perry, “The likelihood today of a nuclear catastrophe is greater than during the Cold War.” “Today, inexplicably to me, we are recreating the geopolitical hostility of the Cold War and we are rebuilding the nuclear dangers of the Cold War. We are doing this without any serous public discussion, or any real understanding of the consequences of these actions: we are sleepwalking into a new Cold War, and there is a very real danger we will blunder into a nuclear war.”

Democrat Jimmy Carter of Georgia defeated incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford. Carter's win represented the lone Democratic victory in a presidential election held between 1968 and 1992, and one of the few in which an incumbent President lost re-election (although Ford was not technically elected), Nineteen presidents have sought reelection since 1900: Of those, 14 won and five lost, Carter later also lost to Reagan in 1981.
