Jimmy Carter's Gorgeous Floral Oval Dish "Rosalynn Pattern" Ex. Christie's
Tableware

Elegant porcelain serving dish, owned by Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter from the "Rosalynn" pattern set, a Carter Varney design produced exclusively for "International China." The piece features a refined white ground accented by a delicate pink rim and a central floral bouquet composed of vibrant pink blossoms, yellow flowers, and purple violets with lush green foliage. The reverse bears the printed mark: "Rosalynn – a Carter Varney Design – Exclusively for International China - Oven to table. Safe for oven freezer dishwasher microwaving. Japan." The dish is of distinctive asymmetrical form, combining modern lines with traditional floral decoration. Light surface wear consistent with careful household use is visible, but the colors remain bright and the glaze retains an attractive sheen. Measures 6.75" x 12.5."

Ex. Christie's: From the Private Collection of President and Mrs. Carter

The "Rosalynn" pattern was designed under the direction of Carter Varney, the celebrated American interior designer who worked extensively with President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter during their years in and after the White House. Varney was instrumental in shaping the Carters' interior aesthetic, favoring fresh American motifs and elegant but approachable design.

The Carter presidency (1977–1981) was marked by significant domestic and international developments, including the Camp David Accords, energy policy reform efforts, and a renewed emphasis on human rights in foreign policy. Objects retained within the family sphere reflect the more intimate side of a historically consequential American presidency.
