ALS

39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter (1924-2024). Autograph Letter Signed, "Jimmy," as president, 1p, on White House stationery measuring 6.75" x 8.875", Washington, March 8, 1978. Blank verso. Carter pens a letter to his presidential campaign organizer Dorothy "Dot" Padgett, regarding the work she is doing.

In full:

"To Dot Padgett

I appreciate your note, & I would be glad to have you come by to see me re your work. You've really been doing well!

I'm sure you & Richard will enjoy working together & I hope you will give him every benefit of your help & cooperation. Of course, he did not know of my interest or of competition for the job.

With love,
Jimmy."

Carter recruited Dot Padgett in 1970 to volunteer for his Georgia gubernatorial campaign. She became a key organizer for his subsequent 1976 presidential campaign, leading the Peanut Brigade, which was a dedicated group of Georgia-based volunteers, friends, and family who traveled to early primary states, knocking on doors, distributing flyers, and personally vouching for Carter to voters. At the time of this letter, Padgett was a key figure in Carter's administration, serving as the Assistant Chief of Protocol at the State Department (1977-1979), handling logistics for foreign dignitaries. Post-Administration, she continued to support the former president, serving on The Carter Center Board of Councilors. Padgett is a former member of the Democratic National Committee, the Georgia Council for the Arts, and the Metropolitan Mental Health Association. She is also the author of "Jimmy Carter: Elected President with Pocket Change and Peanuts," published in 2016.
