Description:

[Kennedy John]

Evelyn Lincoln, JFK's Secretary, Recalls his School Days at Riverdale Country School

A small archive assembled by Evelyn Lincoln (1909-1995), John F. Kennedy's personal secretary, relating to the President's days as a pupil at Riverdale Country School, circa 1930. The lot is comprised of two sheets handwritten by Lincoln; one typed letter signed by her; and two photocopies, including one of JFK's middle school report card. Expected light wear including staple impressions. Else near fine.

Lincoln had submitted this provenance information to Robert L. White of Catonsville, Maryland, a major JFK collector. Many of the pieces in White's collection had been acquired through Lincoln, who had sold or given away thousands of Kennedy documents and personal effects in direct violation of the Kennedy estate's 1965 deed of gift. A court settlement restored the items from White's collection to the National Archives and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in 2014.

1. 1p AM inscribed overall by Evelyn Lincoln on blue-ruled yellow paper, apparently a first draft for an April 22, 1991 letter to buyer Robert L. White. Contains several cross outs. 5" x 7.25".

2. 1p AM inscribed overall by Evelyn Lincoln on "Hilton" hotel stationery, comprising of Lincoln's calculations of John F. and Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr.'s ages when they attended Riverdale Country School.

3. 1p TLS signed by Evelyn Lincoln as "Evelyn Lincoln" at lower right. On cream stationery paper with a "United States Senate / Memorandum" header emblazoned at top. Dated April 22, 1991. 5.125" x 8".

In part, unchanged from the original:

"[typed] Dear Robert:

This xero copy of a Scholarship Report, which you now have in your possession, was given to John Kennedy for the period ending February 25, 1930 by the Riverdale Country School, which he was attending at the time. He and his brother, Joe, who was 15 and 2 years older than John, attended Dexter School in Brookline, Massachusetts, from there they entered Riverdale, and finally completed their Preparatory education at the Choate School.

The interesting grade on this report is the one for Penmanship, which was B 2. He was 13 years old at that time.

Sincerely,

[signed] Evelyn Lincoln

[typed] Evelyn Lincoln

Personal Secretary to

our late President John F. Kennedy."

4. 1p photocopy of Lincoln's April 22, 1991 letter on onion skin paper.

5. 1p vintage photocopy of John F. Kennedy's "Upper School Scholarship Report" from Riverdale Country School in Bronx, New York for the period ending February 25, 1930. JFK's academic average for five subjects--English, French, Geography, Mathematics, and Penmanship--was a C+. JFK attended the Riverdale Country School between 1927-1930, completing 5th-7th grade there. The private day school for young boys had been established in 1907 by Frank Sutliff Hackett and his wife Frances, and espoused a progressive curriculum. Still in operation today, Riverdale Country School is now co-ed.

Evelyn Lincoln served as JFK's personal secretary for over a decade, beginning when the politician was a Senator from Massachusetts, and until his assassination in Dallas in 1963. Lincoln recalled her experiences working for JFK in My Twelve Years with John F. Kennedy (New York: David McKay Company, 1965).
