Description:

JFK Assassination Wall Street Journal Ticker Tape "Pandemonium broke loose"

A sheet of Wall Street Journal Ticker Tape which relayed the news of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. 1p, measuring 6" x 16.75", [Washington, D.C.], [November 22, 1963]. The ticker tape has been housed within a matting frame to the overall size of 13.75" x 17.75". With flattened folds and uneven top and bottom edges from where the sheet was cut from the machine. There are stains from tape residue at the top and bottom margins, which are hidden by the mat. Overall very good.

The breaking news provides incoming information on the events in Dallas, with statements from AP Photographer James W. Altgens and AP Reporter Jack Bell. At the time, it was still unknown whether the president had survived or not. This historic sheet was collected by the consigner when she was working at the Wall Street Journal in Washington, D.C.: "The machine stopped, I got up to see why, read the first line, tried to remember where the President was and the tape continued. When it stopped, I tore off the tape and took it to Allen Otten (staff reporter) who gave it back to me saying, 'You should really keep this.'"

Excerpts from the report reveal just how hectic the situation was and how little information was known:
"President Kennedy was shot today just as his motorcade left downtown Dallas - Mrs. Kennedy jumped up and grabbed Mr. Kennedy…AP Photographer James W Altgens said he saw blood on the President's head. Altgens said he heard two shots just thought someone was shooting fireworks until he saw the blood on the President…AP Reporter Jack Bell asked Kenneth O-Donnell Presidential Assistant if Kennedy was dead - O-Donnell gave no answer. Kennedy was reported taken to Parland [sic] Hospital near the Dallas Trade Mart where he was to have made a speech. Bell said Kennedy was transferred to an ambulance. He lay on a seat of the car. Bell reported three shots were fired as the motorcade entered the triple underpass which leads to the Stemmons Freeway Route to Parkland Hospital. Pandemonium broke loose around the scene. The Secret Service waved the motorcade on at top speed to the hospital…Gov John B Connally of Texas also cut-down by bullets. The President was slumped over in the backseat of the car face down - Connally lay on the floor of the rear seat. It was impossible to tell at once where Kennedy was hit but bullet wounds in Connally-s chest were plainly visible…It was difficult to determine immediately whether the First Lady and Mrs. Connally were injured…At 1:50 PM Eastern Standard Time Acting White Secretary Malcolm Kilduff was asked whether the President was dead - I have no word now - Kilduff replied…"
