During the assassination, Secret Service member Clint Hill ran into the line of fire from the Secret Service follow-up car, leaped onto the back of the presidential car, and shielded the stricken president and first lady with his own body as the car raced to Parkland Memorial Hospital. Just two hours later, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested at a Dallas movie theater by Officer Nick McDonald. During the arrest, Oswald attempted to shoot McDonald but the gun didn't go off. The two engaged in a short tussle before Oswald was disarmed and led out of the theater. He was taken into custody and formally charged for the murder of Officer Tippet that evening, although he was also already suspected of the murder of the president. During his two days at Dallas Police Headquarters, Oswald was repeatedly interrogated but continued to claim he was innocent and a "patsy". On the morning of November 24, Oswald was escorted through the basement of police headquarters by detective James Leavelle to transfer him to a nearby county jail. Oswald never made it to the armored car waiting for him; he was shot in the abdomen by Jack Ruby, fell into unconsciousness, and died two hours later at the same hospital where they had taken John F. Kennedy.
