White House S.S. Agent Acquired Iced Tea Spoon Set Gifted by Indonesian President Soeharto

20th C. Korean 6-pc silver iced tea spoon set gifted by Indonesian President Soeharto and acquired by Secret Service agent Warren "Woody" Taylor (born 1936). Taylor served in the White House Secret Service between 1961-1982, and Soeharto acted as the military dictator of Indonesia between 1967-1998, so this silver spoon set likely dates from either the Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, or Reagan administrations.

The silver iced tea spoons, each with a tapering chased floral and foliate handle, nestle in a custom black velvet-covered hinged case. Each spoon is engraved "Korea, Silver" verso. With expected light tarnish, else near fine. Accompanied by a card reading: "With the Compliments of The President of the Republic of Indonesia and Mrs. Soeharto." Both the card front, as well as a gilt paper medallion perhaps removed and saved from the gift packaging, are decorated with handsome depictions of the seal of Indonesia. The Garuda Pancasila, as the seal is known, represents a Javan bird of prey associated with the Hindu deity Vishnu. The Garuda holds a heraldic shield depicting emblems of the nation's Five Principles. The national motto "Unity in Diversity" can be seen unfurled in the banner below.

Soeharto (also spelled Suharto) (1921-2008) was the 2nd President and de facto military dictator of the Republic of Indonesia for over 30 years. He was an important American ally in southeastern Asia during the Cold War because he rejected Communism.

Warren "Woody" Taylor worked in the Secret Service for over 20 years. Assigned to Lyndon B. Johnson's Vice-Presidential Detail in the Dallas Motorcade, Taylor witnessed and later testified about the Kennedy assassination.

Provenance: Estate of Warren "Woody" Taylor
