Description:

JFK Assassination Incredible Eyewitness Account of Parkland ER Surgeon; He Treated Kennedy & Oswald!

1p autograph letter signed by Dr. Robert N. McClelland, a Parkland Memorial Hospital emergency room attending surgeon, as "Robert N. McClelland M.D. / Professor of Surgery, Univ. of Texas Southwestern Medical School" at lower left. Dated June 30, 1990. Accompanied by 10pp of photocopies from the Warren Commission Report, with two pages annotated in Dr. McClelland's hand, and one signed by him. Expected light paper folds to the letter, else near fine. The stapled photocopies have a bent upper left corner, otherwise very good. 8.5" x 11".

Dr. Robert McClelland (1929-2019) reported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas soon after hearing that 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) had been shot in the downtown Dallas motorcade on November 22, 1963. Dr. McClelland, then an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School, also assisted in the surgery of primary suspect Lee Harvey Oswald (1939-1963) on November 24, 1963. Dr. McClelland was thus uniquely situated to observe and treat the lethal injuries of both men.

The lot includes:

1. 1p letter to a Kentucky school teacher named Roy Hensel in which Dr. McClelland writes in part, "I received your letter asking for some information about my role in the events surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy…I hope this will help you and I wish you the very best in your very important role as a teacher."

2. 10pp of photocopies from "The New York Times Edition, Report of the Warren Commission, The Assassination of President Kennedy", including pg. 65-69; and portions of Appendix VIII, "Medical Reports from Doctors at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, Tex.", including pg. 483-484, 490, 498-499. Dr. Robert McClelland originally described what he saw to the Warren Commission in two sessions, on March 21st and March 25, 1964.

Dr. McClelland has inscribed on the top of pg. 490: "This is my statement to the Secret Service. There was no wound at the left temple as first thought - simply much blood clot in that area. R.N. McClelland".

On the top of pg. 498, Dr. McClelland has inscribed: "The Operative Record for Oswald". In addition, Dr. McClelland highlighted his name as it was mentioned in the records on pg. 66, 67, 484, 498, and 499.

On November 22nd, in the pink-tiled operating room called Trauma Room 1, Dr. McClelland had assisted inserting a breathing tube into the president's neck wound. He had an opportunity to carefully study the degree and extent of the president's wounds. Based on his assessment of Kennedy's injuries and his working knowledge of gunshot wounds, Dr. McClelland later became one of the most credible proponents of the multiple-assassin conspiracy theory.

Dr. McClelland also assisted in the emergency operation of Lee Harvey Oswald; he was tasked with cardiac massage and defibrillation efforts. Despite doctors' best efforts, Oswald died less than 90 minutes later. Dr. McClelland later posited that new surgical techniques in place today may have saved Oswald.
