Description:

“JFK’s Embassy Lounge”, Original Mixed Media Painting by Robert Mars. 18" x 18" x 1.5" in size.

An original resin-coated mixed media artwork on stretched canvas depicting President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) by American pop artist Robert Mars (born 1959). The brightly colored, multi-layered collage depicts a smiling JFK set against a kaleidoscopic background of geometric patterns; a vintage sign reading "The Embassy Lounge" is superimposed across Kennedy's bust at lower left. Signed on the left edge in bold silver metallic paint marker, "Robert Mars '16". Unframed. Overall measures 18" x 18" x 1.5".

This is a perfect example of Mars's unique style of artwork, blending multiple eras of American culture to create neo-pop inspired by other iconoclastic pop artists like Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg, Mars uses Xerox transfers of iconic images, and then layers them with vintage cut-outs from magazines, newspapers, advertisements, and signs. The layers are embellished with paint and then cemented with resin to produce splashy images with as much panache as Warhol's Marilyn Monroe. The focal points of Mars's artwork are often drawn from postwar American culture. He especially favors celebrities from the 1950s and 1960s, like JFK. Other subjects are objects with talismanic significance, similar to Warhol's Campbell's Soup Can. The execution of Mars's artwork--with its composition of multiple layers--symbolizes the accretion of popular culture; how collectively, we remember individuals and events over time through shifting lenses. In this way, Mars's work is often viewed as highly nostalgic, and a truly refreshing take on Americana.

Mars’s artwork is exhibited worldwide including in museum collections in Munich, Tokyo, Amsterdam, London, Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, Laguna Beach, Paris, Aspen, and Naples. Add this museum-quality Robert Mars piece to your collection today!
