Description:

Lind Jenny

Partially printed and partially handwritten bifold dinner invitation with short ALS inscribed overall and signed by Swedish soprano Jenny Lind Goldschmidt (1820-1887) as "Jenny Goldschmidt" in the center of the second page. In near fine condition, with expected minor folds, tipped to a larger cream sheet. Invitation measuring 3.625" x 5.375". From the Collection of Norman Boas of Seaport Autographs and recently purchased at Christie's December 5, 2017 sale.

"Mr. and Mme. Goldschmidt" requested a certain "Mr. Ch. Pollack's Company" at a dinner to be held two weeks hence on January 18th at 7:15 pm. The "Swedish Nightingale", evidently an exacting hostess, added the following ALS at the invitation bottom:

"Dear Mr. Pollack,

You must not refuse to come. Dr. Temple, the headmaster of Rugby is coming to us for a few days and we are anxious to entertain him decently once … at least - so pray - do come. God bless you and all yours in the New Year and believe me,

Yours most sincerely,

Jenny Goldchmidt".

Jenny Lind first charmed audiences of the Royal Swedish Opera in 1838. The phenomenal teenaged soprano toured Denmark, Germany, Austria, and Great Britain before announcing her retirement from the opera while in her late twenties. Lind married German composer and pianist Otto Goldschmidt (1829-1907) while touring the United States in 1852. Lind was a generous philanthropist, often giving performances to raise money for charities.

The Goldschmidts' houseguest, here referred to as "Dr. Temple", was Frederick Temple (1821-1902). This British educator served as the headmaster of Rugby School between 1858 and 1869, and, many years later, served as the Archbishop of Canterbury.
