Jefferson Davis (1808-1889). Manuscript Document Signed, "Jeffn. Davis / Col. Mi. Riflemen", 1p, on a pale blue sheet measuring 16" x 6.25", Camp Allen, near Monterey, October 6, 1846. Docketing at verso. Attractively penned in the hand of Richard Griffith (1814-1862) and signed by him as "Attest - R. Griffith, Adjt. / Miss. Reg. Riflemen". Flattened folds and light creases. Minor discoloration, mostly isolated to edges. In fine condition.

Titled, "Morning Report of the first Regiment of Mississippi Riflemen, Commanded by Col. Jeffn. Davis", in tabular form this document lists the number of companies present and absent for duty by rank.

At the beginning of the Mexican War, Mississippi raised a volunteer unit, the First Mississippi Regiment, for the U.S. Army. Jefferson Davis expressed his interest in joining the regiment if he was elected its colonel, and in the second round of elections in June 1846, he was chosen. Davis was able to get his regiment armed with new percussion rifles instead of the smoothbore muskets used by other units. Because of its association with the regiment, the weapon became known as the "Mississippi rifle", and the regiment became known as the "Mississippi Rifles". It was at the Battle of Buena Vista when other American units began to be overrun by the Mexicans that Davis gave the order, "Stand fast, Mississippians!" The regiment stood their ground and the battle was eventually won. Davis's order later became the regimental motto.

Richard Griffith was a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. During the Mexican War, he served as an infantryman with the 1st Regiment of Mississippi Rifles, where he met and became friends with Colonel Jefferson Davis. After the war, he returned to civilian life and made his living as a banker and a U.S. Marshal. He was active in state and local politics, and was elected as the State Treasurer of Mississippi in 1847. He was a member of the antebellum Mississippi Militia, holding the rank of brigadier general.
