Description:

Jean Dubuffet TLS Praising Female Artist

A 1p typed letter in French signed by modern artist Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) as "Jean Dubuffet" at center. Dated "Thursday 27 October" [n.y.] N.p. Written on a leaf of cream paper, evenly toned, and with expected paper folds, else near fine. 5.25" x 7.25." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

Jean Dubuffet addressed this friendly letter to an unknown correspondent named René, who was also a mutual acquaintance of the subject of the letter, the female French modern sculptor Germaine Richier (1902-1959).

Translated in full, with untouched usage and punctuation:

"Thursday 27 October

my dear René

How Madame Germaine Richier is kind! All of our friendship is due to her. How she is different from all the adulterated people that one is accustomed to meet in the artistic and literary world, how she is true and interesting! Tell her, I ask you, how much we like her. I would have the great desire to see her again soon and to see her works of which much good has been said from all sides, and of which I am sure, knowing their author, that they are things that I will like. Would she want to receive me at her place sometime soon? I would like it well. Good wishes of friendship to you and to her

Jean Dubuffet."

Jean Dubuffet was a modern French painter and sculptor who founded the "art brut," or "raw art" movement of the late 1940s. This movement embraced art in all its forms from everyone, including self-taught or folk artists.
