Description:

Jean Daillé, Huguenot Theologian, Partial ALS

A partial autograph letter signed in French by Jean Daillé (1594-1670), the French Huguenot theologian, as "your very humble & very obedient servant Daillé" at lower right. N.d., n.p. Trimmed at top and laid down on a sturdy stock paper backing. Moderate creases, overall soiling, and isolated loss along folds or edges. Mounting residue, a rusted paperclip impression, and a pencil inscription can be found verso. Else very good to near fine and quite legible. The fragment measures 6.75" x 3."

Jean Daillé wrote an unknown correspondent, translated in part:

"…your colleague who threw me from one extremity to another for the reasons that I said, discretion not permitting me to further explain. One believes that he feels jealousy to which he was accustomed, to accuse both of his brothers, who were not passionate about him. Let's pray God that he is ignorant of these things, of which they have accused him…I haven't yet done the office that you desired & I hope that it will not be missed by you when you meet the person whom you await. But one believes that it is not like Man to dream besides when he finds the method to subsist in his post…I pray God conserves you in long & perfect health to his people, which you serve & edify…Continue to grant me the honor of your holy friendship, & believe me to be enough.

Monsieur & my honored brother

Your very humble & very obedient servant
Daillé."

Daillé was one of the leading defenders, or apologists, of French Protestants or Huguenots. Ordained in 1623, Daillé served as a minister in Saumur and Charenton in the mid-1620s. In 1659, Daillé acted as a moderator at the Synod of Loudon, the last synod of Protestant leaders to convene prior to the 1685 Revocation of the Edict of Nantes which made the practice of Protestantism illegal. Daillé wrote several religious works including "Apology for the Reformed Churches, showing the necessity of their separating from the Roman Church" (1633), and "Faith Founded on the Holy Scriptures, Against New Methods" (1661).
