Jean-Baptiste, Comte de Rochambeau ADS Re: Artillery & Troop Preparations
ADS

Jean-Baptiste, Comte de Rochambeau (1725-1807) was the commanding General of the French soldiers in support of the American Revolution. He played a critical role in the siege of Yorktown, working closely with General Washington. By the end of the war, approximately 18,000 French troops were in North America.

Autograph Document Signed, "le comte de Rochambeau," in French, 1p, 6.25" x 7.875", no place, "le 24 juillet." Docketed at verso. Deckled left edge. Very minor age toning. Flattened folds and light creases. In fine condition.

Though untranslated, the document mentions movement and supply of large quantities of cartridges and powder; locations such as Saint-Malo, Saint-Brieuc, and Saint-Servan, important French Atlantic ports used during the war to send troops and supplies to America; and maneuvers and embarkation orders, typical of troop preparations.

Rochambeau was a French Royal Army officer who was commander-in-chief of the Expédition Particulière, the French expeditionary force sent to North America during the conflict. Rochambeau played a critical role in the American victory at the siege of Yorktown in 1781 during the American Revolutionary War, working closely with George Washington, who hosted Rochambeau at Mount Vernon on their way south. The two armies assembled in Virginia by late September, and the siege of Yorktown began on September 29 and ended on October 19.
