Description:

James "Whitey" Bulger ALS "I'm high profile person and High Risk"

2pp lined paper, measuring 7.75" x 10.5", [Sumterville, Florida], n.d. [Ca. 2016]. Signed "Jim Bulger" and addressed to "Jay", who could possibly be J.W. Carney Jr., Bulger's criminal defense attorney. The letter covers a range of topics, including various Mixed martial arts (MMA) matches, his reputation in jail, and advice on health. Reading in part:

"You have a busy life I'm retired with time on my hands - take care of the important things - family first. When you have more time write me a few lines - great hearing about the MMA and your report on Ronda Rousey fight was like I had a ringside seat. The front kick has to be devastating when delivered smoothly. Would take the fight out of some - hard to recover from…I'm 87 have had 2 or 3 heart attacks…memory is bad…I'm high profile person and high risk due to past in 50s escape plots etc. Warden wrote whenever escape plots come up Bulgers name is there - these things follow you and 16 years on the Run. Back to MMA - with Floyd would step into MMA Ring with Conor…B.J. Penn back - I never liked him - arrogant and seemed to always treat his opponents with disdain - plus never seemed to be much for training…I'm glad your handling break up so well - not easy have been there with a girlfriend I went with after 9 years in prison - knocked me for a look - felt like no one ever went through what I was going through. Was for the best - never would have met Catherine. Take care of your health - eat healthy and get couple of pair of dumbbells and do some exercise 1/2 hour a day - make it a way of life - not too much or you won't be able to find time…" The letter has a flattened mail fold and is boldly signed. Very fine.

James Joseph "Whitey" Bulger (1929-2018) was an Irish-American crime boss who led the Winter Hill Gang in Somerville, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. Bulger became entangled in the Boston criminal underworld at a young age, joining the "Shamrocks" street gang at the age of 14. He got involved in the Killeen-Mullen mob war in the early 1970s, and by 1972, he and the Mullens were in control of South Boston. Bulger successfully ran his organized crime operation until 1994, when the FBI built a case to arrest him under the RICO Act, and he fled Boston on December 23, 1994. In 1999, he was placed on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list and remained on the loose for twelve more years. He was finally arrested in June 2001, having been cornered in Santa Monica, California with his girlfriend Catherine Greig. He was convicted of 19 murders, racketeering, extortion, narcotics distribution, and conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, and money laundering, and was sentenced to life in prison. In September 2014, Bulger was placed in the Coleman II United States Penitentiary. On October 30, 2018, he was murdered by another inmate just hours after being transferred to Hazelton Penitentiary.
