A rare, fine content war-date autograph letter signed, 3pp. 5" x 8", "Hd. Qr. 9th C.", February 26, 1865. To Capt. D. R. Larned. Folds, one toned strip at middle, otherwise very good.

Van Buren writes, in part:

"Yours of the 22nd came last night. I hardly know yet whether I am a Bvt. B.G. or not having rec'd no official notification & my only information being the newspapers wh[ich] sometimes make mistakes. I was exceedingly surprised to see my name among the list of confirmations not having the least idea such a thing was in contemplation. I shall write to the Genl. in a day or two…I will cordially write in any plan of testifying our regard for the Genl. but think a later time would be better than this, say when we finally separate. In this opinion Loring agrees with me. Nothing new here. Mr. [John?] Parke is in command of the army, Meade being away on acct of the death of his son. Willcox off on a leave & Potter comdg the Corps. We expect to be in Petersburg in a few days…".

James L. van Buren (1837-1866) was Union brevet brigadier general and the cousin of Martin van Buren, brevetted on April 2, 1865 for his bravery at Ft. Stedman. He was the youngest man to receive that honor. Van Buren mustered out on Mar. 31, 1866, dying just two weeks later at the age of 29.
