Virginia Governor James Monroe grants land to Col. Philip Pendleton, who had led a regiment in the Revolutionary War, during which time he had title to land owned by George Washington

Partly Printed Document Signed "Jas Monroe" as Governor of Virginia, 1 page, 15" x 12.25". Richmond, Virginia, November 16, 1800. On vellum. Usual filing folds, infill at center where folds cross. Blind embossed paper seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia affixed with red wax at lower left. Clear signature not affected by light soiling or folds. Fine condition.

In part, "Know ye, That by virtue of a Land Office Treasury Warrant Number Two thousand one hundred and eighty three issue the nineteenth of April one thousand Seven hundred & ninety Nine there is granted by the Said Commonwealth, unto Phillip Pendleton, A certain Tract or Parcel of Land containing one hundred and twenty nine Acres by Survey in the County of Berkeley on both sides of the Warmspring run ƒ"

On October 5, 1776, from the Heights of Harlem, Gen. George Washington wrote to his younger brother, Samuel, in part, "Mr. Pendleton obtained my Deed; or a Bond, or something obligatory upon me, and my heirs, to make him a title to the Land he had of me, and sold you, upon the purchase Money being paid, not one farthing of which has yet been done, even the last years Rent, if I remember right, which he took upon himself to pay, is yet behind. However, as soon as I can get Evidence, I will send a power of Attorney to Lund Washington to make legal conveyance of the Land, to you. In the meanwhile the Instrument of writing I passed to Mr. Pendleton will always be goods against my Heirs, upon the Condition's of it being compiled with ƒ"

In Writings of Washington, John C. Fitzpatrick identifies "Mr. Pendleton" as "Col. Philip Pendleton, of Berkeley, Virginia. The land sold was a part of Washington's Bullskin plantation in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia." During the Revolutionary War, Philip Pendleton (1752-1802) was Colonel of the Berkeley County and Culpeper Militia.
