Description:

James Monroe's Last Residence, Lovely Artistic Rendering

An original artist's rendering of the last home of 5th U.S. President James Monroe (1758-1831) at 63 Prince Street, New York City. The pen and ink sketch on cardstock is signed and dated as "DiMariano / 1919" at lower left, and entitled at lower center and lower right as "Old New York / James Monroe's / House / Old New York /cor. Lafayette St + Prince St. / Built 1822." The drawing shows a high level of detail and an impressive degree of artistic sophistication. Overall minor toning with scattered stains, mat burn, and surface loss. Expected edge wear including a slightly blunted lower left corner. Heavily marked with graphite or charcoal verso. Else very good to near fine. 11" x 14.25."

James Monroe was forced to leave Oak Hill, his plantation near Leesburg, Virginia, after his wife's death in September 1830. Traveling north, he moved in with youngest daughter Maria Hester Monroe Gouverneur (1802-1850) and her husband Samuel Gouverneur (1799-1865), then serving as Postmaster of New York. The Gouverneurs had purchased two desirable lots in lower Manhattan in the 1820s and converted the corner lot into an elegant Federal 2 1/2-story brick mansion at 63 Prince Street and Lafayette Street. Monroe lived at 63 Prince Street for less than a year, dying there on July 4, 1831. Despite his short occupancy there, the house garnered attention as Monroe's "last residence" well into the 1920s. Heroic efforts to save the property from destruction were foiled when the house partly collapsed during an attempt to relocate it across the street in 1925. Today, the site is occupied by a 15-story loft building whose downstairs tenant is the department store Alexis Bittar.
