James Monroe Presidential pardon, 10" x 15" (sight). Dated the "Eighth day of January, one thousand eight hundred and eighteen" . Signed by James Monroe as President "James Monroe", and countersigned by John Quincy Adams as Secretary of State "John Quincy Adams". Embossed seal affixed to lower left. Expected folds. Strong, vibrant contrasting ink with a spot with a slight touch of haloing. Matted and framed in a gilt toned rubbed frame with two portrait engravings to an overall size of 20.75" x 21.75". Not examined outside of frame.

 

A highly unique Presidential pardon whereas Monroe pardons a person convicted of the crime of manslaughter. The felon, Isaac Butler, was convicted of his crime in 1816, and served out his eighteen month sentence but was unable to additionally pay his fine due to his impoverished state. The pardon is shown in part below:

 

" … a certain Isaac Butler was convicted of the crime of manslaughter, and was sentenced to be imprisoned for the space if eighteen months and to pay a fine of one hundred dollars; and whereas it has been represented to me that the said Isaac Butler has been kept in close confinement during the whole of the said term of eighteen months, but that, by reason of his extreme poverty, he is wholly unable to pay the said fine, and it appearing, moreover that his case is at present entitled to favorable consideration: now therefore, I, James Monroe, President of the United States, moved as well by the Premises as by divers other good causes have remitted, and do hereby remit, unto the said Isaac Butler, the fine aforesaid, fully and entirely exonerating and discharging him from the payment of same, or any part thereof …
