James Monroe 1802 Land Grant Signed as Governor of VA
Partially Printed DS

James Monroe (1758-1831). Partial printed, partial manuscript document signed, "Jas. Monroe," as governor of Virginia, 1p, on vellum, 15" x 12.25", Richmond, Virginia, April 9, 1802. Docketing at verso. Intact paper-covered wax seal at lower left. Expected folds and creases. Loss at central fold intersection affects a few words of text. Top and bottom blank margins with loss at central vertical fold. Toning, foxing, and soiling, heavier at verso. In very good condition.

James Monroe served as the 12th and 16th governor of Virginia, from December 28, 1799 to December 1, 1802, and January 16, 1811 to April 2, 1811, respectively. While the state's Constitution endowed the governor with very few powers aside from commanding the militia, this type of document was a common official act of the Virginia Governor at the time, particularly for granting lands to veterans of the Revolutionary War or their assignees using land bounty warrants. Monroe would also use his position to convince legislators to enhance state involvement in transportation and education, as well as establish increased training for militia. He would also begin to give State of the Commonwealth addresses which further highlighted areas he believed should be addressed in local politics.
