In full:

"Dear Sir

I did not receive till yesterday your favor of the 29th Ult. The Translated Treatise on the "Science of War" was not quite so long on the way.

The intrinsic value of the Work forms a just title to my thanks; to which I must add those due for the kind interest you express in the few years of life remaining to me. With you, there are many in prospect. I hope they will be happy ones; made so by continued pursuits useful to the public & praiseworthy for yourself.

With esteem & friendly respects

James Madison."

In this thoughtful letter, James Madison (1751-1836) writes to Maj. John Michael O'Connor, author of the important 1817 military manual A Treatise on the Science of War and Fortification. O'Connor's two-volume work offered one of the most comprehensive American overviews of military science and engineering in the early republic, drawing from European military thought and practice. The treatise covers military strategy, troop organization, artillery, cavalry, and extensive discussion on the principles and structures of fortification, including walls, towers, moats, and defensive architecture.

Writing in his retirement at Montpelier, Madison expresses appreciation for the treatise's "intrinsic value," and acknowledges both the intellectual merit of the work and the author's service in advancing military knowledge. Given Madison's wartime leadership as Commander-in-Chief during the War of 1812, the letter carries weight as a rare intersection between a Founding Father and an emerging American military theorist.
