Partially printed land grant signed "James Madison" as President, for 100 acres of land in Ohio granted to the assignees of Harod Gibbs for his military service. 1p, 12" x 15" vellum matted to an overall size of 15.75" x 21", with fully intact covered seal affixed to the lower left corner, Washington, DC, January 7, 1815. Countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office Josiah Meigs. The document records that "in consideration of Military Service, performed by Harod Gibbs to the United States, in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, and in pursuance of an Act of the Congress of the United States, passed on the 10th day of August, in the year 1790, intituled "An Act to enable the Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment to obtain Titles to certain Lands lying north west of the river Ohio, between the Little Miami and Sciota;" and another Act of the said Congress, passed on the 9th day of June, in the year 1794, amendatory of the said Act, There is granted, by the United States, unto John A. Fulton, asignee of John Hobson and Matthew Hobson, who were asignees of the said Harod Gibbs, a certain Tract of Land containing One hundred acres, situate between the Little Miami and Sciota rivers, north west of the river Ohio".

James Madison was a founding father and the Fourth President of the United States. Madison's presidency marked a period of significant expansion of United States territory, with 110,000 square kilometers of land acquired through treaties or warfare with Native American nations. The document here records a key area of expansion at this time known as the "Old Northwest" - today's Great Lakes region stretching from Ohio to Minnesota.
