James Madison Land Grant One Week After War of 1812 Ends
Partially printed DS

James Madison (1751-1836). Partially printed land grant signed "James Madison" as President, for land to be sold at the Cincinnati land office. 1p, 13.5" x 8.5" vellum with fully intact covered seal affixed to the lower left corner, Washington, D.C., February 24, 1815. Countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office Josiah Meigs. A few isolated areas of discoloration in bottom left corner and along bottom edge, expected creasing and flattened folds, but overall very fine condition with crisp edges and bold presidential signature.

The document records that "John Wirtz of Montgomery County having deposited in the General Land Office, a Certificate of Register of the Land Office at Cincinatti whereby it appears that full payment has been made for the southwest quarter of Section Thirty two of Township Four in range Five (East of the meridian Line) of the Lands directed to be sold at Cincinatti by the Act of Congress, entitled 'An Act providing for the sale of Lands of the United States in the Territory north west of the Ohio, and above the mouth of the Kentucky river,' and of the Acts amendatory of the same, There is granted, by the United States".

James Madison was a founding father and the Fourth President of the United States. Madison was elected President in 1808 and led the new nation in the War of 1812 against Great Britain, which was seen as a "second war for independence" and popularized Madison. This land grant is signed just seven days after Congress ratified the Treaty of Ghent, ending the war. Madison's presidency also marked a time of significant expansion of United States territory, with 110,000 square kilometers of land acquired through treaties or warfare with Native American nations. The document here records a key area of expansion at this time known as the "Old Northwest" - today's Great Lakes region stretching from Ohio to Minnesota. In fact, this territory was one of the key points of contention that ultimately sparked the War of 1812, with the United States under Madison wanting to expand into the region that until the war had been controlled by Tecumseh's Confederacy, Native American nations allied with Great Britain. With Congress's ratification of the Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812 on February 17, 1815, the new territory was opened to United States settlement.
