Nearly ten years earlier, Lt. James Longstreet served with distinction in the U.S. 8th Infantry during the Mexican War, earning himself several brevet promotions. Here he writes to the father of his friend, Bvt. Capt. George E. Pickett, with whom he served in the 8th Infantry down in Mexico, regarding his son's service during the war, in part: "Bt. Capt. Pickett was with his Regt. and one of the first in the landing at Vera Cruz. During that siege he performed most important, arduous, and gallant services. He was in the battle of Cerro Gordo . . . At Churubusco he was particularly distinguished as one of the most gallant soldiers on that field. I was near him through the day. And can safely say that more conduct, and gallantry was not exhibited by an American Officer during the Mexican war. He was equally distinguished . . . in the subsequent battles of Molina, del Rey, Chapultepec, and carrying the gate San Cosme at the City of Mexico." During the Battle of Chapultepec, Longstreet was carrying the regiment's colors up the hill when he was wounded in the leg. He handed the flags off to his friend, Pickett, who charged to the top of the castle. The battle still under way below, he lowered the Mexican flag and raised the American and 8th Infantry flags. For his bravery, he received a brevet promotion to captain.

Longstreet continues his letter regarding his friend's post-war service: "Since the Mexican war, your son has commanded a Company on the Texas frontier, and has performed most important and arduous services. He is not only distinguished for gallantry; but has at all times shown himself well worthy of command and position."
