Description:

Irwin James

Photograph signed and inscribed "To Danny / Best wishes from the Moon / Jim Irwin", 10" x 8", official NASA color image of Irwin saluting the American flag beside the Lunar Module and the Lunar Rover. The image is titled in the lower blank margin, "ASTRONAUT IRWIN SALUTES FLAG AT APOLLO 15 HADLEY-APENNINE LANDING SITE." Very light soiling and creases, else fine condition overall.

This was the first lunar mission to deploy the lunar rover, facilitating expanded exploration of the Moon's surface. During the astronauts' exploration of the Apennine delta, the crew recovered perhaps the most famous lunar sample taken during the Apollo missions: the so-called "Genesis Rock". Originally thought to be a piece of the Moon's primordial crust, subsequent analysis demonstrated that the rock was only 4.1 billion years old, slightly younger than the Moon itself, but it is still one of the oldest samples recovered from the lunar surface.
