Description:

James Gavin TLS RE: "Operation Market Garden" & Gen. Patton

A one-page typed correspondence on personal letterhead regarding Operation Market Garden, with an accompanying two page letter on Gavin's views of General George S. Patton originally enclosed with, and referenced in, the main TLS. Signed "James M. Gavin" in blue ballpoint pen at the conclusion. 1pp, measuring 8.5" x 11", dated June 17, 1971, Cambridge, MA. Minor creasing to corners with slight mark and indentation from a paper clip at upper left. Otherwise, very good with fascinating content!

In part:
"A thorough and exhaustive intelligence survey was done of the "Market-Garden" areas. Concealing a division in the dense, heavily foliaged, German forest is a pretty simple matter and it was done all the time. On the Russian side, the Russians were even able to move and conceal field armies at times. Actually, the troops that intervened against the British were the remnants of two Panzer Divisions… The British thought that they were in the area of the 82nd Airborne Division when I landed but it turned out, they were in the area of the British First Airborne Division."

James Maurice Gavin (1907-1990), was a senior U.S. Army Officer and third Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. Sometimes referred to as "the jumping general", so named because of his participation in several combat jumps the with paratroopers under his command, he would become the youngest major general to lead a Division at the age of 37. In September 1944 the 82nd, along with the 101st Airborne Divisions, were deployed over the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden with the purpose of creating an invasion route into northern Germany. The mission was unsuccessful, however, in securing an area over the Rhine that would have fully accomplished this objective.
