Description:

James Dean Signs an Agreement Between Himself & Loews Inc., Ex. Agent's Estate

TLS, 2p, measuring 8.5" x 11", dated June 19, 1953, New York, NY. A two-page typed letter from James Dean to executives at Loews Incorporated, then affiliated with MGM, in which he agrees to perform "screen and/or voice tests" without compensation. Signed on second page as "James Dean" in blue ballpoint pen, and countersigned by the Vice President of Loews Inc. mutually assenting to the agreement. This document, created two years before his first major role in East of Eden (1955), helps to highlight perhaps the first steps to boosting his film career. Printed on onion skin paper, exhibits expected toning and surface markings throughout, with creasing to lower right corner of both pages. Stapled at top left. Overall, very good. Provenance: The Estate of Jane Deacy, Dean's agent.

Dean's terms, outlined on page 1, reads in part:

"1. I agree that during the period commencing on the date hereof and continuing to and including August 31, 1953, I will report to you at such times and places in New York City as you may designate for the purpose of enabling you to make such screen and/or voice tests of me as you may deem necessary to determine whether of not you desire to avail yourselves of my services… and that I will, without compensation, render such services as may be necessary for the purpose of making such tests.

2. You agree that within said period to and including August 21, 1953 you will make such tests of me as are ordinarily and customarily made by you for the purpose hereinabove referred to.

3. In consideration of the foregoing agreement on your part to make tests of me, I hereby give and grant you the sole and exclusive right or option to my exclusive services upon the terms, covenants and conditions set forth in that certain contract…"

James Dean (1931-1955) was a classic American actor whose career, although short, left a lasting impression on Hollywood and in the hearts of millions. After making several smaller-scale Television and film appearances between 1950-1954, Dean would go on to star in three feature films over the course of one year; East of Eden (1955), Rebel Without a Cause (1955), and Giant (1956, released posthumously). Forever remembered for his iconic role as Rebel's Jim Stark, he is often regarded as a relatable, cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement. This letter agreement comes at a relative mid-point in Dean's career, suggesting his dedication in pursuing larger roles with the help of his agent, Jane Deacy (1914-2008). Commonly referred to by her nickname, Lady Jane, Deacy was a notable talent agent and manager who represented actors such as George C. Scott, among others.
