Description:

Buchanan James

James Buchanan Signs a Large Passport, 1845

Bi-fold partially printed document, signed by James Buchanan as "James Buchanan," 11" x 16.5." Dated "November 14, 1845." Document printed to recto of first page, balance of pages left blank. Near fine and bright, with slight wrinkling to the lower edge. Lovely strong contrasting ink.

A large decorative US passport with an engraving of an eagle to the top. The descriptive characteristics of the person run along the left margin, some would be considered quite odd by today's standards, however there is no accompanying photo so the description perhaps became more necessary:

Age 28 years

Stature 5 Feet 8 1/2 Inches Eng

Forehead Medium

Eyes Blue

Nose rather short

Mouth Medium

Chin Round

Hair dark chestnut

Complexion floria

Face Oval

Signature of the Bearer

Wm Slater

An intriguing look into passports from another era. This one authorizing to "permit safely and freely to pass William S. Slater, accompanied by his wife, two children, and a nourse(most likely a nurse), a Citizen of the United States and in case of need to give him all lawful Aid and Protection." Signed by Buchanan as Secretary of State.

During Buchanan's tenure as Secretary of State, the United States grew immensely with the conclusion of the Oregon Treaty and victory in the Mexican-American War.
