Buchanan James

James Buchanan signed letter as President, 1858

 

Single page autographed letter signed, 5.75" x 7". Written entirely in the hand of Buchanan while President. Dated 'Washington 7 March 1858," and signed with a large signature as "James Buchanan." Page mounted on an original album page. Slightly trimmed to the left margin. Page is toned, slightly grubby and with light staining and smearing of the ink.

 

An extremely scarce ALS, President Buchanan responds to a fan requesting his autograph, and bids good wishes and success for her upcoming fair.

The Ladies "Fair for the Poor," which was held the following day in the Music Hall, Boston, MA, on March 8, 1858.

 

Shown in full below:

 

"My dear Madam,

You ask for my autograph. This is indeed a small favor. Were it much greater it should be most cheerfully granted to promote the benevolent object of your solicitude.

 

Wishing the "Fair for the poor" all the success it so well deserves, I remain
