Envelope Free Franked "Free / James Buchanan" as President,5.25" x 3", flap torn open on verso, no paper loss. Red wax Seal of the President, chipped at edges, at back flap. Addressed by President Buchanan to "Messrs. T.W. Bayaud & Co. / Commission Merchants / New York." Circular "WASHINGTON CYD.C. FREE" postmark "APR 19," indecipherable year, but 1857/1858. Light soiling. Fine condition.

Circular "WASHINGTON CYD.C. FREE" postmark. According to Phillips American Stampless Cover Catalogue, this type Washington Free postmark with a "Y High" in CY(City) and straight line FREE was used from 1856-1858.


T.W. Bayaud & Co., Commission Merchants, were located at 100 Pearl Street, New York. They advertised in newspapers as General Agents for North America importing wine from France. According to former White House chef Francois Resavy in A Treasury of White House Cooking, at Buchanan's Inaugural festivities, "Guests danced, dined and wined. The wine alone was said to have cost $3,000." According to vivino.com, President Buchanan preferred "Spanish wine made from white grapes (sherry) and very robust Portuguese wine (Madeira)."
