In full:

"Washington 25 May 1857

Gentlemen:

I have received your kind favor of the 16th. Instant inviting me, on behalf of the Legislature of Massachusetts, to be present, 'on the occasion of the celebration of the seventeenth of June next & the inauguration of the Statue of General Warren.' I should be much gratified were it in my power to accept this distinguished honor for which I feel truly grateful; & therefore, deeply regret that the pressure of important public business will render this impossible. No spectacle could afford me greater satisfaction than to be present at the inauguration of a Statue dedicated to the memory of the first great martyr in the cause of American independence.

[p2] Please to accept my cordial thanks for the courteous & acceptable manner towards myself personally in which you have executed the trust confided to you & believe me to be yours respectfully

James Buchanan"
