In part:
"Inclosed I return you the patent issued to Peter Walter. It cannot be exchanged for money; the law for the purpose having expired. There is yet due from the United States to Wolcott Walter $62 "67. In order to obtain this money one of the heirs of Wolcott Walter with the consent of the rest must administer on his estate & after having done so the person may send me a power of attorney to receive the money. I need not instruct you as to the mode of drawing it. I found among my papers the certificate of Jacob Marks for a pension under the Act of Congress of the 18th March 1818 with a memorandum enclosed in the handwriting of Mr. Gloninger. Whether you gave it to me or not I cannot tell as my time was so devoted to business for several weeks before I left Lancaster…Congress is very dull & I think will be so till the end of the present session."

James Buchanan (1791-1868) served as the 15th president of the United States from 1857 to 1861, but prior to this he represented Pennsylvania in both houses of the U.S. Congress. He served as a Member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania from 1821 to 1831 and was a prominent leader of the "Amalgamator party".
