Abercromby James Manuscript Document Signed “Ja Abercromby” as His Majesty’s Justice of the Peace on verso of Manuscript Document Signed “Willm Guy Junr,” 1p, 18.5” x 16.75”. Colleton County, South Carolina, July 22, 1740. On laid paper. Expertly strengthened at folds. A few tiny holes, mostly at fold intersections. Uniformly toned. Fine condition.

In part, “…in the fourteenth Year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the second by the Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith … Between William Guy Junr of Colleton County in the Province of South Carolina Gentleman of the one part And James St. John of Charles Town in the Province aforesaid Esqr of the other part Witnesseth that for and in Consideration of the Sum of five shillings Current money of South Carolina aforesaid to the said William Guy Junr … He the said William Guy Junr hath Bargained and Sold and by these presents Both Bargain and Sell unto the said James St. John All that Plantation or Tract of Land containing Five hundred and Eight Acres more or less Situate lying and being in Colleton County…” Description of the boundaries of the 508 acres follows.

On verso, Abercromby has attested to the fact that “on the 24th July 1740 personally appeared before me James Abercromby Esqr one of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace Assigned in Berkley County, William Irvin, who being duly sworn declares that he saw William Guy Junr Sign Seal and … Deliver the within Instrument of writing … and that he saw Jonathan Thompson also subscribe his name as a witness thereof.” Also on verso are the signatures “Jonatn Thompson” and “William Irvin” as witnesses. This deed was “Recorded in the publick registers office of this province in Book … 688 a 690 this 29 day July 1740” signed “Robt Austin Pub: Regtr.”

In 1730, James St. John was appointed by King George II as Surveyor General of South Carolina and Inspector General of North Carolina and South Carolina. James Abercromby (1708-1775) was the first Attorney General of the Province of South Carolina from 1730-1744, except during his visits to his home in England. In 1729, the Colony of Carolina had become two royal colonies, North Carolina and South Carolina. In 1735, Abercromby served on a commission to draw a boundary between the two Carolinas.
