Description:

Hardie James

James A. Hardie signed 1865 military telegraph

1p partly printed and partly handwritten "U.S. Military Telegraph." signed by Brevet Major General and Inspector General of the United States Army James A. Hardie (1823-1876) as "Jas A. Hardie, Ins Gen USA" at center. Docketed verso. In very good to near fine condition, with expected folds, minor edge tear at right, and isolated stains near bottom. Accompanied by a full transcript on "The Lincoln Library, Shippensburg, PA." letterhead. From the collection of the Norman Boas Estate.

Dated June 7, 1865 from Washington, DC., Hardie wrote:

"To Bvt. Brig Gen Alonzo Alden

 Col. 169th Ct. Vols.

Your Commission was forwarded May thirtieth (30) to New Bern NC -

Jas A. Hardie

Ins Gen USA".

Hardie performed critical staff duties related to communication during the Civil War; this was one such example. Colonel Alonzo Alden (1834-1900) of the 169th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry had been nominated Brevet Brigadier General in January 1865, and his appointment was confirmed 2 months later. The Williams College graduate was mustered out of the army the month after receiving this missive.
