Garfield James

James A. Garfield’s College Algebra Book with His Handwritten Equations

“Ray’s Algebra Part Second: An Analytical Treatise, Designed for High Schools and Colleges” by Joseph Ray, M.D. 396pp, 4.5” x 7.25”. Cincinnati: W.B. Smith & Co., 1852. Original soiled calf boards, worn spine-upper portion torn. Soiled pastedowns, foxed endpapers. Written by Garfield in pencil on the blank flyleaf opposite foxed title page are about seven equations using sine and cosine and, on the foxed verso of the back flyleaf, additional algebraic equations. Both flyleafs have flaws with portions missing. The book itself is internally sound. Good condition.

On verso of the front pastedown is Garfield’s 2.75” x 1.5” bookplate imprinted “Inter Folia Fructus / Library of / James A. Garfield / No.”

From JamesGarfield.org: “In 1851 … he entered the principal educational institution of the Campbellites, Hiram Eclectic Institute (later Hiram College). He was not a very quick study, but he was determined and he soon had an excellent knowledge of Latin and was fairly adept in algebra, natural philosophy and botany…” He attended Western Reserve (Hiram) Eclectic Institute from 1851-1854. The book here offered was his algebra book which he kept for the rest of his life.

The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned including this one.
