Jacques Thibaud

Jacques Thibaud, French Violinist, SP

Vintage double-weight black and white Apeda photograph of French violinist Jacques Thibaud (1880-1953) inscribed, signed, and dated by him in French as "A mon ami / Jules / Jacques Thibaud / Dec 5: 1921" at lower right. Stamped "Jacques Thibaud" verso. A minor crease in the lower left corner, and expected light surface wear, else near fine. 5" x 6.75".

Jacques Thibaud dedicated this photograph to an unidentified friend at the peak of his musical career. Thibaud is depicted holding a dark-stained violin in the upright position in his left hand, and a horsehair bow in his right hand.

Thibaud's reputation as a brilliant violin soloist was established after receiving formative training at the Paris Conservatoire in the 1890s. After 1905, Thibaud formed a trio with Swiss pianist Alfred Cortot (1877-1962) and Spanish cellist Pablo Casals (1876-1973). They performed together for the next 20 years, making early sound recordings of mostly Romantic Period masterpieces. In 1943, Thibaud co-founded an international competition for pianists and violinsts in Paris. Thibaud was killed in a plane crash in 1953, in which his 1720 Stradivarius violin was also destroyed.
