Jacqueline Kennedy writes to legendary Paris art book publisher Georges Herscher thanking him for his book on fashion designer Sonia Rykiel

JACQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS (1929-1994) Typed Letter Signed, "Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis," 1 page, 5.75" x 8" on her blue personal letterhead, [New York], June 11, 1985 to publisher Georges Herscher, thanking him for a book he recently published concerning the work of French fashion designer, Sonia Rykiel, with three additional lines and salutation in her hand. Very fine.

She writes, in full "Your copy of SONIA RYKIEL arrived today. It was most thoughtful of you to remember me. I am sure it is a book I will enjoy a great deal. It is such a fabulously beautiful book – please accept all my congratulations–"

The recipient, Georges Herscher (1920-2008), was a giant in the world or art book publishing, founding the house of Editions du Chêne in 1971. During the 1970s he published numerous groundbreaking books, normally printed in limited runs of 3000-5000 editions including books devoted to André Kertész, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eugene Atget, Robert Doisneau, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Edouard Boubat, Diane Arbus, and Rem Koolhaas. In 1980 he founded his own publishing concern bearing his name, which he ran, producing fine art books until 1987 when the firm was sold. ("L'éditeur George Herscher... est mort..." Le Monde, Paris, January 26, 2008).
