Description:

Kennedy Jacqueline

A lovely, clandestine note penned in the hand of Jacqueline Kennedy as First Lady, with "The White House, Washington" letterhead.

5" x 8". Near fine. Provenance: This piece came from the estate of Mary Gallagher, and will be accompanied by her signed and dated letter of authenticity.

Jacqueline pens an excited note anticipating a letter or call from Alexis Minotis, a Greek actor and director. By the 1940's Alexis came to Hollywood to appear in Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious with Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, and Claude Rains, followed by additional Hollywood movies, alongside Joan Collins, Sophia Loren and others. Jacqueline's note had his Athen's address and phone number along the top with an intriguing and oddly excited comment of: "Put his address in your book. Tell operators + mail room - if I  get a letter or call from him - it is to be put through immediately (He is sending me a book + letter marked attention Mary Gallagher."

Jacqueline's oddly emotional note gives one pause as to the extent of the relationship. The note was written to Mary Gallagher her personal secretary, and although much of this note is rather cryptic, by this point, Alexis Minotis had regular interactions with Jackie, and oddly enough also had strong connections to Aristotle Onassis.

What we know is that Jackie Onassis learned about Greek theater and literature from this distinguished source, perhaps the most important new friend she made in her new life, director and actor Alexis Minotis. And we know that in 1958, Minotis had directed opera singer Maria Callas in a production of Medea in the city of Dallas, Texas. The two had become friends and frequented numerous classical perfomances at Apitdeivros, the fourth century B.C. theater. They also attended the theater and opera together in New York. Minitos was also a close friend of Artistotle Onassis and we know that Jackie had a strong friendship with Ari prior to the death of John F. Kennedy. In fact there are numerous photos depicting  Ari with Minotis both before and after Jacqueline's marriage to Onassis.

As such this rather giddy, cryptic letter makes one wonder… the passing of time, and events leave only conjecture.

Mary Gallagher was formerly the secretary to Senator John F. Kennedy, and Personal Secretary to Jacqueline over a period of 12 years. A wonderful piece with outstanding provenance.
