Signed Menu/Program

Jackie Robinson (1919-1972). Two Signed Brooklyn Dodgers Programs, 1955-1956. The 1955 program is signed in pencil on front cover by: Jackie Robinson in the upper left, Don Hoak, Sandy Amoros, Billy Loes, Bob Borkowski, Ed Roebuch, Pee Wee Reese, Jim Hughes, Rube Walker, Don Zimmer, Clem Labine. Signed on back cover by Karl Spooner. The 1956 program is unsigned on front, signed on back by Bobby Thomson as "Bob Thomson" (the "Staten Island Scot" a former New York Giants baseball player who in 1956 played for the Milwaukee Braves) and in the centerfold by an unidentified player and Taylor Phillips (pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1956). Programs are 12p each, 6" x 10", and each show moderate toning, some tears along the edge of the front and back covers and general wear, else fine and signatures bold with Robinson's signature prominently positioned. The 1955 program is accompanied by a PSA Letter of Authenticity for Jackie Robinson's signature.

Jackie Robinson and the Dodgers stand out as the player and team to first racially integrate American Major League Baseball, with the Dodgers signing Jackie Robinson in 1947 as the first African American Major League player. Robinson won Major League Baseball Rookie of the Year Award that year. Despite his outstanding athletic skill Robinson endured racial slurs and aggression from opposing teams. Dodgers teammates although initially divided over their team integrating, found allies among some of his new teammates, with Pee Wee Reese famously quoted as saying "You can hate a man for many reasons. Color is not one of them." Reese is another signer on the 1955 program. The Dodgers are also notable in New York City history as a beloved team, known colloquially as Dem Bums, who were notoriously sold to Los Angeles in 1957. These two programs represent the last two seasons for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
