JACQUELINE KENNEDY (1929-1994) Typed Letter Signed, "Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis," 1 page, 8.5" x 11" on Doubleday letterhead, New York, November 27, 1989, with the salutation accomplished in her had, to publisher Georges Herscher expressing her wishes to work him on another project. Fine.

She writes, in full: "I have been reading your magnificent Berard book, and remembering the great pleasure it was to work with you so long ago. It would be most agre[e]able to do so again. Could you send me your list and let me know which you think might work best here. I hope this letter finds you well."

The recipient, Georges Herscher (1920-2008), was a giant in the world or art book publishing, founding the house of Editions du Chêne in 1971. During the 1970s he published numerous groundbreaking books, normally printed in limited runs of 3000-5000 editions including books devoted to André Kertész, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eugene Atget, Robert Doisneau, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Edouard Boubat, Diane Arbus, and Rem Koolhaas. In 1980 he founded his own publishing concern bearing his name, which he ran, producing fine art books until 1987 when the firm was sold. ("L'éditeur George Herscher... est mort..." Le Monde, Paris, January 26, 2008).

Christian Bérard (1902-1949), also known as Bébé, was a noted French artist, fashion illustrator and designer who worked for such luminaries as Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Nina Ricci. He is perhaps best known for his costume designs for Jean Cocteau's film La Belle et la Bête (1946).

Herscher had published Boris Kochno's Christian Bérard in 1987.
