Description:

Jackie Kennedy and Mamie Signed Lot

Two autographed items relating to First Ladies Mamie Doud Eisenhower (1896-1979) and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (1929-1994), including a signed First Day Cover, and a hand-addressed and signed air mail envelope.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A First Day Cover depicting 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed by his beloved wife Mamie Doud Eisenhower as "Mamie Doud Eisenhower" in felt-tip pen along the top edge. With an unusual two-toned brown cachet at left, and bearing an 8-cent U.S. Eisenhower stamp postmarked from Girard, Ohio on June 19, 1972. Near fine. 6.5" x 3.625."

Mamie Doud Eisenhower outlived her husband by a decade; he had died at age 78 in March 1969.

2. A blue air mail envelope entirely engrossed by Jackie Kennedy, wife of 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy, with her correspondent's name and address recto and her signature and return address as " Mrs John F Kennedy / 3307 N St NW / Washington DC" verso. Postmarked from Washington, D.C. on January 18, 1960. Expected weathering including wrinkles and unevenly opened verso, else near fine. 6.625" x 3.375."

John and Jackie Kennedy lived at 3307 N Street NW in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C. between ca. 1957-1961. They lived in the 3-storey Georgian style brick-front home when daughter Caroline was born in November 1957, and also throughout John's 1960 presidential campaign.

The identity of Jackie's addressee is unknown. "Mrs Stephen Sanford" referred to Mary Duncan (1894-1993), the silent movie actress and wife of accomplished polo player Stephen "Laddie" Sanford (1898-1977). The Sanfords maintained a mansion in Palm Beach, Florida called Los Incas. Palm Beach had been a Kennedy family pied-à-terre since the 1930s. The affluent Sanfords and Kennedys doubtlessly moved in the same circles.
