Kennedy Jacqueline

Jackie Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson at Fort Worth Chamber of Congress Breakfast Hours before Dallas, Original 1st Generation Photo Taken & Owned by Cecil Stoughton

Original first-generation photograph taken by and personally owned by JFK White House photographer Cecil W. Stoughton (1920-2008). The reverse is stamped and hand-inscribed in pencil: "Negative Number C420-34-63 / Photographer Cecil W. Stoughton" verso, part of Stoughton's unique numbering and filing system. The double-weight, glossy color photograph printed on Kodak paper shows First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, and Second Lady Bird Johnson at the Fort Worth Chamber of Congress Breakfast held on November 22, 1963. Expected minor surface wear, else near fine. 10" x 8".

The focus of the photograph, taken at an extreme upward looking angle, is Jackie Kennedy and LBJ at center standing behind the ballroom head table. At right, Jackie stands beautifully garbed in what would shortly become the notorious pink Chanel wool suit; LBJ stands at her right dressed in a non-descript brown suit adorned with a red ribbonned and white carnation boutonniere. Lady Bird, dressed in white and smiling, is located towards the left edge of the photo. The elaborate Mission style wrought-iron wall sconce seen in other breakfast photographs and film footagecan be seen in the background.

The Fort Worth Chamber of Congress Breakfast was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Texas at 9:00 AM CST on November 22, 1963. Approximately 2,000 attendees, mostly area businessmen, had purchased the $3 tickets. JFK had arrived a little late after greeting a 4,000-person crowd assembled in the rain outside Hotel Texas, but he then delivered a 12-minute-long speech emphasizing Fort Worth's significant role in the American defense industry. His concluding remarks were in part: "So I am glad to come to this State which has played such a significant role in so many efforts in this century, and to say that here in Fort Worth you people will be playing a major role in the maintenance of the security of the United States for the next 10 years."

JFK was in Texas lobbying support for local Democratic candidates. His 2-day, 5-city tour was meant to include Houston, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Dallas, and Austin. After completing his remarks before the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, JFK flew to Dallas. He was assassinated and pronounced dead less than four hours after greeting well-wishers at Hotel Texas.
