Description:

Jackie Kennedy ALS Mentioning Ties, Along with 3 of Her Fashion Designer Oleg Cassini's Personally Owned Neckties

A small lot related to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (1929-1994) and one of her favorite fashion designers, Oleg Cassini (1913-2006). The lot consists of a 2pp autograph letter signed by Jackie and addressed to Oleg mentioning ties, and three of Oleg's designed and personally owned neckties. Since the theme of the lot is neckties, we thought it would tie together well to match the letter with the ties! Provenance: From the personal property of the Estate of Oleg Cassini.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A 2pp autograph letter signed by Jackie Kennedy as "Jackie" verso at lower right. N.d., n.p. On a Tiffany & Co. pale blue stock card with a white scallop shell embossed at top, with a matching original transmittal envelope further endorsed by Jackie as "Mr Oleg Cassini" (his street address was inscribed in a different hand.) There is a minor vertical crease at the center of the card and partial staple holes along the top edge, else near fine. 4.75" x 3.5." The envelope is letter-opened at top and right, and also has staple marks.

Jackie wrote to Oleg Cassini, her beloved White House fashion designer: "Thank you for your beautiful ties - and for the enchanting little jersey blouse which Caroline is trying to lure away from me - You were so sweet + thoughtful to remember us - "

The letter offers several clues as to the date, notably Caroline's being old enough to covet her mother's clothing. The letter probably dated from Jackie's residence in New York City sometime during the 1970s.

2. Three men's neckties designed and worn by Oleg Cassini. The cherry red, sky blue, and yellow striped ties are all silk, and the blue tie is from the Oleg Cassini "Burma" Collection. The ties have brand labels discretely located verso. The red tie has a few light scuffs and stains, else near fine. Average size approximately 55" long.

The lot illustrates how Jackie Kennedy and Oleg Cassini shared their mutual interest in clothes well after Jackie had left the White House. After his tenure as Jackie's fashion designer between 1961-1963, Cassini continued designing for Broadway, television, and film, later establishing his own boutique and professional brand.

Cassini designed 300 outfits for Jackie during his time as her exclusive fashion designer-- or "Secretary of Style". Cassini had a concrete vision of what Jackie's clothing would look like, and more importantly, what it would represent. Her evening gowns, day wear, suits, coats, hats, and accessories would create a distinctive "Jackie look" that would mark the reign of the new "American Queen."
