Jack London frequented Hawaii during the last years of his life. The island celebrity's comings and goings were faithfully reported by the Honolulu-based Hawaiian Gazette. (The newspaper operated between 1865-1918, becoming a semiweekly after 1894.) On November 24, 1916, Hawaiian Gazette editor Roderick O. Matheson wrote a tribute to London, reported dead at 40: "It is hard to conceive of Jack London as dead, difficult indeed to visualize him as anything but gay and bouyant [sic, with the aloha he had for all the world about him lighting up his smile, for Jack London was alive to his fingertips every moment he lived… To those of us in Hawaii who knew Jack London as a friend, a neighbor, a good fellow and a booster… the news…comes as a more than a shock."

In 1915 alone, even though London was in chronically poor health, he published a play, five poems, and a novel called The Star Rover. These works joined other London classics like Call of the Wild (1903), White Fang (1906), and The Cruise of the Snark (1911).
